Materials needed: cucumber, vinegar, cloves of garlic (optional) and salt. fresh dill is a nice addition if you have access to it, but it's not necessary. Other optional ingredients that can be used is jalapenos (fresh or pickled) and / or cayenne pepper (dry).
The number of cucumbers that you need to purchase based on how much you want to make a pickle jar. Buy one to two pounds of cucumbers for your first foray into the pickling. Best cucumbers usually labeled "pickled cucumbers" in the produce section of your grocery store. English cucumber variety is also good to use. Choose the smallest cucumbers you can find 3 "-4" long. (You can use a large variety but it would be better to slice it into sections.)
Getting started is easy.
1. Get the jars and ingredients lined up. Wash your cucumber thoroughly.
2. Add a little vinegar to your jar, then add a teaspoon of salt. (If this is not enough salt for you, you can customize to your taste in the next batch). Stir jars around or stir until the salt dissolves.
3. Peel two cloves of garlic and a decline into the jar. (You can cut them in half or leave them intact). It is also a good time to add fresh dill if you have. No need to trim it, just wash it and put it in, stems, leaves and all. If you want to slice it to measure it, using about 2-3 tablespoons.
4. Add the jalapenos or cayenne pepper if you enjoy spicy pickles. Then add your cucumbers. You may need to trim some of them to enter into the jar. This is probably the easiest to slice them lengthwise before placing them in a jar but this is optional.
